Jem Lawson, Member-at-Large
Jem (they/them) is a transplant to Minneapolis from Louisiana. They moved to Minneapolis in 2018 in order to create a fuller life for themselves. They identify as both blind and deaf as they are hard of hearing in one ear as well as totally blind. Since being in the Twin Cities, they have sung with Calliope women’s chorus as well as Twin Cities Women’s Chorus. This summer they were a part of the GALA trans and non-binary course. Recently coming out as non-binary, they have realized that a women’s choral space is not the best fit for them. This fall, they are on a break from singing in a choir and devoting their time to queer youth as a mentor through Queerspace collective, participating in singing circles, and involved in social justice activist spaces. Jem lives with their cat, Pachamama and enjoys the outdoors, finding coffee shops, and avid reading.
