About us
One Voice has been “building community and creating social change by raising our voices in song” for over 35 years. At One Voice Mixed Chorus, we believe in the transformative power of music to build community, foster inclusion, and amplify voices that need to be heard. As one of Minnesota's largest and most vibrant LGBTQIA+ and straight ally choruses, we are committed to celebrating diversity and driving social change through the arts.
Our History
One Voice Mixed Chorus was formed in 1988—one of the first choruses in the country to bring together people from LGBTQIA+ and ally communities. The intent was to unite for a common goal of creating social change through music; the gay and lesbian communities had already begun working together to address the AIDS crisis, which had reached astronomical proportions, and it was clear that further social change was needed.
Jane Ramseyer Miller
Jane Ramseyer Miller was hired as the Artistic Director of One Voice in 1996 and was the creative force behind the chorus until her retirement in January, 2023.
During her tenure, she directed over 50 One Voice concerts, commissioned 40 individual pieces of music from up-and-coming Queer composers, produced the ReMembering: Singer Water film, and created the Sound Mind podcast, among many other things.
Her legacy continues with the Jane Ramseyer Miller Commissioning Fund where all donations directly support the creation of new compositions by Queer and BIPOC artists for One Voice projects.
Commissions
One Voice has discovered that a great way to share its mission through music is to create original music for the LGBTQ community. One Voice has commissioned over 45 individual songs since the chorus was founded in 1988.
We have collaborated with composers such as Steve Milloy, Mari Esabel Valverde, Holly Hee Won Coughlin, and many more!
Support future commissions by making a donation to the Jane Ramseyer Miller Commissioning Fund!
Today
Today, One Voice is one of the largest LGBTQIA+ choruses in North America, drawn together as members and straight allies of the LGBTQIA+ community. Being a member of One Voice is a profound experience for many chorus members, affecting their sense of identity and connection to community. Together, we dedicate our time and energy to the One Voice mission: “Building community and creating social change by raising our voices in song.”
